Why is my house always dusty?

inner 2

Dust! Where on earth does it all come from? You can spend all day removing every speck of dust, and a day or two later, there’s a thick layer of dust on all your surfaces again. If you’re forever dusting, you may start to think that it’s you, that somehow your household is producing an extreme amount of dust. This can be true in part, but dust is a fact of life. You can’t eliminate it entirely, but you can drastically reduce it, and these days there are some clever solutions to excess dust problems.

What exactly is dust?

When you look at dust, it just looks like one substance, but in fact, if you were to put the dust from your home under a microscope, you’d discover a world of detritus. Lurking in your dust could be flakes of human skin, pet hair and dander, bacteria and viruses, small particles of food and soil, pollen, and cloth fibres.

Can I just ignore it?

If you’re truly fed up with dusting, you may decide that you simply can’t be bothered with it anymore, you’ll just live with it and pretend it’s not there. This can be a tempting plan, particularly on high shelves and the tops of wardrobes that you can’t see anyway, but you really shouldn’t neglect your dusting as it can lead to health problems, particularly if you have allergies. Dust can cause a range of adverse conditions from cold-like symptoms to asthma, and it can also contribute to poor sleep.

How does my house get dusty?

Some of the dust in your home will consist of skin, hair, and fibres from you, your pets, and your clothes. Even more dust will be brought in on your shoes, and fill float in through open windows and doors. As you move around your home, the lightweight dust particles are lifted up into the air, where they circulate and resettle.

How do I prevent my home from being so dusty?

While it’s very hard to eliminate dust entirely, there are several ways in which you can hugely reduce the amount of dust in your house and so substantially lower the risks to your health. You can check door and window seals to ensure excess dust isn’t constantly finding its way into your home that way. Removing shoes and outer clothing you’ve worn outdoors can also cut down on the dust that finds its way into the home. Dusting with a standard duster tends to just move the dust around, so swapping to a microfibre duster, or a damp cloth can help to actually remove the dust from your surfaces. A good vacuum cleaner and a regular cleaning regime are also essential for banishing dust.
